Making connections – A youtube odyssey

A few bars of a tune heard on ClassicFM is all it takes sometimes to set me off on a journey of discovery. Yesterday morning I heard what sounded like something from the theme tune of Lord of the Rings. Today I checked it out, and sure enough it was  Howard Shore’s The Road Goes Ever On, part 1.

Something in this reminded me of the John Williams Hymn to the Fallen

and that reminded me of the Fanfare for the Common Man, by Aaron Copland

And that led in turn to Appalachian Spring,

which always sounds very melancholy and not spring-like at all at the beginning of the piece. It is a shame that the piece gets cut off in the middle, but that’s the downside of Youtube. Nevertheless I get a lot of pleasure from these meanderings.
