Breaking the rules

A portly black woman was running for the bus. Although it was not at the stop, the white middle-aged driver pulled up and opened the doors to let her on. She smiled as she boarded and my heart sang. In a world where there is so much publicity about racial incidents this one would never get reported. Yet here was an example of everyday kindness from someone who did not need to put themselves out, but did so anyway. It’s probably against the rules to stop in an unauthorised place. It may even have annoyed one or two car drivers behind the bus who had to wait a few seconds. But for that woman it made all the difference to how her day unfolded and for me it gave me cause for joy.
